ID Quantique is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with sales offices and engineering, development, and research laboratories around the world (Geneva, Switzerland – Boston, USA – Seoul, South Korea). Our experienced team is committed to working closely with customers, distributors, solution providers, and partners.
The company was founded in 2001 in Geneva, Switzerland, by four scientists from the University of Geneva, who foresaw the significant impact of quantum physics on information technology. It initially operated as a small university spin‑off, focusing on research projects to demonstrate the feasibility of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), commonly known as quantum cryptography. In 2003, IDQ developed its first QKD products for data centers and carried out the first test implementations. From 2010 onward, IDQ launched quantum‑safe encryption solutions for commercial and government markets worldwide.
In 2016, IDQ raised additional funding from strategic investors, including South Korean telecom giant SK Telecom. Together with SK Telecom, the company developed the world's smallest quantum random number generator (QRNG), based on technology and expertise licensed from IDQ.
More recently, in April 2018, ID Quantique raised $65 million from SK Telecom to further develop IDQ's quantum technologies for the telecommunications and IoT markets. German telecom operator Deutsche Telekom also invested in the same year. These investments have strengthened ID Quantique's position as a global leader in quantum‑safe cryptography and quantum detection solutions. They have also supported IDQ in continuing to grow its global markets and partnerships.
